Saving FSDAL Students

As Great General Election (Pemira) in 2014 approached, a number of Natural Resource and Environment Faculty (FSDAL) students intended to propose an establishment of student council. However, Muhammad Faras Al-Yafi and friends’ intention was not claimed as the faculty did not have an administration. Whereas, an agreement from Faculty Dean was needed to establish an organization in the faculty.
Feeling discordant about organizational structure in his faculty, Farras and friends met the former team of FSDAL. When they asked about the permission, it turned out that FSDAL did not have it yet. “FSDAL former team said that the permission is being processed” this Mining Engineering student said, Tuesday (8/3).
Besides, Farras admitted that he was not informed since the beginning that the majors in FSDAL did not have an operational permission. “It must not be like this if it has been informed,” he complained. Even, Farras added, one of the lecturers did not have a decree for lecturing.

On the other hand, an anonymous student (Eks) majoring Petroleum Engineering, had just known that FSDAL did not has a permission when he was in the second semester. He heard it while talking with his same faculty friend. But he was still optimistic. “At first, I still thought positively that the permission would be approved,” Eks said. But, since January 2016, he started to worry about his status in FSDAL. Furthermore, at that time, spread the news that the faculty would be closed.

As he did not want the majors in FSDAL being closed, Eks visited Bogor Botanical Garden  to meet President Joko Widodo who sometimes jogs in the weekend. He did it deliberately to make the permission approved by the president. “Unfortunately, he was in America at that moment,” he sadly said.

Besides visiting Bogor Botanical Garden, some of FSDAL students went to Ministry of Religion to request the permission. “We will visit whoever is in charge soon,” said Eks. Almost all of FSDAL students even made an open letter to get the permission of the 3 majors approved.

To clarify about students’ permission which was entrusted to Physic major in FST, the faculty held the audience at February 9th 2016. Vice rector of Academic Department, Fadhilah Suralaga clarify, the audience was purposed to save the status of Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Geology Engineering students. It was attended by 75 students, 51 parents, The head of UIN Jakarta, Head Office of Academic Administration, and FSDAL former team which represented by Jamhari and Ahmad Syahid.

In the audience held in Diorama UIN Jakarta, the students with parents demanded 5 things: make a serious effort to get the permission approved no matter what, FSDAL students moved to another State Institute for Higher Education (PTN) with the same major and level (for the students who do not want to change study program), move to another study program in UIN Jakarta without any test and condition (for the students who want to change major), UIN Jakarta coordinate the different students’ opinion, and the last, bring this case to the law if UIN Jakarta cannot coordinate students’ opinion.

In response to the first demand, Vice Rector Department of General Administration, Abdul Hamid explained, UIN Jakarta had arrange for a decree about the major establishment since 3 concentration had moved to FST. But, Hamid continued only Mining Engineering received the positive response from Diractorate of Higher Education (Dikti).

Hamid explained, the high number of lecturers became the reason why Mining Engineering program study would receive the permission from Higher Education. “If the permission for Mining Engineering is approved, this major will be a new product of FST,” clarify Hamid, Wednesday (16/3)

Concerning demands from the students who want to move to another campus, Vice Rector Department of Academic, Fadhilah stated that there was a team which visited the chief of Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Trisakti University to fulfil the students’ option. Sadly, it was unsuccessful. “They can move to another major, but still in UIN Jakarta,” Fadhillah said, Friday (18/3). But, Fadhilah continued, the option about moving to another major did not prevailed for the students of Mining Engineering, because that major is the only one which has a guaranteed permission.

Nevertheless, one of the parents, Hasyim Asyari, did not response Fadhilah’s effort positively.Though he did not much complain during the audience, he expressed his disappointment. “My son’s passion is on Petroleum Engineering, but since the permission has not been approved, he must move to Mining Engineering,” Hasyim said, Friday (18/3)

After facing many obstacles, in January 26th 2016, the head of UIN Jakarta held an audience again for explaining the effort they had done and the things related to academic rules in certain major when applying the third option, moving to another major in UIN Jakarta. There were 19 students of Geology Engineering, 17 students of Mining Engineering, 26 students of Petroleum Engineering, and some of the students’ parents attended this audience.

Until now, there are 6 FSDAL students who moved to PSPD, 5 Petroleum Engineering students moved to Public Health, 3 Petroleum and Geology Engineering students moved to Pharmacy. Besides, some students moved to FST, 5 students from Petroleum Engineering and 4 students from Geology Engineering moved to Information System.

On the other hand, 21 students preferred to stay in Mining Engineering, 11 Petroleum and Geology Technic students moved to Mining, 2 students from Geology Engineering and 1 student from Mining Engineering decided to leave UIN Jakarta. Those students moving decree was legalized on March 7th 2016. For the next, Fadhilah continued, FSDAL students must join matriculation program in their new major.

One of the former team of FSDAL, M.K Tadjudin suggested that UIN Jakarta had better move those students to Mining Engineering for a while. “If Geology and Petroleum Engineering has permission, they can move back to their previous major,” he suggested, Thursday (17/3).
